“I think he will be a great governor,” Huckabee said Des Moines Register Staff Blogs

Huckabee noted that he had visited all 99 counties in Iowa, spending much of two years in the state, in the leadup to the caucuses, so he has many friends here.

Iowans can expect to see him here again a lot in the next year, he said, to campaign for his chief Iowa caucuses adviser, Bob Vander Plaats, in the governor’s race — a remark that drew a round of applause from the book-clutching crowd.

“I think he will be a great governor,” Huckabee said.

Vander Plaats spent much of the evening at the front door of the Borders bookstore, greeting customers and shaking hands.

He wasn’t the only prominent Iowan in Republican politics to stop by to greet Huckabee, though. Sen. Charles Grassley came, too. He talked with people at the store about his opposition to the health-care reform bill that passed the House on Saturday. But, like the rest of the crowd, he was there to get a book signed. It wasn’t for himself, though.

He showed Huckabee his phone and a message sent from his wife: “Be sure to tell Mike Huckabee I am one of his biggest fans,” it read.
